Gold Coast beaches have reopened despite large amounts of baitfish in the water just two days after a fatal shark attack.
Gold Coast beaches from Burleigh to the border are closed and patrols by helicopter and jet ski are searching coastal waters for a shark that attacked and killed a surfer late Tuesday at a netted beach at Coolangatta on the southern end of the Gold Coast.
Some shark nets on the Gold Coast are expected to be replaced with “scientifically monitored trials” of smart drumlines and drones, under a compromise proposal to be announced by the State Government to prevent whales being trapped in nets.
