Supercars stay for second weekend as Sydney’s loss is Townsville’s gain, again

First it was the State of Origin – now Townsville has once again cashed in on virus breakouts in the south, with back to back weekends of Supercars events for the second successive year.

Back-to-back events will be held in the city with the Townsville 500 between 9-11 July and the Townsville SuperSprint on July 17-18.

A total of five races will take place over the next two weekends after organisers pushed back Sydney’s leg due to NSW’s ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

The Super trucks, Super2 Series, Carrera Cup and Gazoo Racing 86 Series will all be held this weekend with discussions ongoing for the second leg.

“Following the success of last year’s inaugural double-header, we know two weeks of racing in Townsville allows us to maximise exposure and competition during these times,” Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said.

Queensland’s Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the back-to-back events were a win for the region.

“The Supercars double-header is a perfect excuse to pack a bag for Townsville and beat the winter chills,” Hinchliffe said.

“We know events like the NTI Townsville 500 brings tens of thousands of extra visitors to the North.”

Shane Van Gisbergen leads the 2021 championship standings with 1361 points with Chaz Mostert and Jamie Whincup hot on his heels in second and third respectively.
