Experience the limitless potential of queer imagination at The Making of Pinocchio

Known for his long nose that grows when he tells a lie, Pinocchio was first introduced to us in the pages of children’s books, but his story has since been adapted for many other media forms.

The newest re-imagination of his story is making its Australian premiere at this year’s Brisbane Festival, exploring the themes of love and transition told through the eyes of the iconic wooden puppet, who dreams of being a ‘real boy’.

Don’t be fooled by the children’s protagonist – this show is not for the kiddies. Taking over Brisbane Powerhouse from September 13–16, The Making of Pinocchio is for anyone seeking to explore the sheer joy and limitless potential of queer imagination.

This autobiographical tale of love and transition follows the story of artists and lovers Rosana Cade and Ivor MacAskill’s relationship, as they grapple with the complex emotions that come with Ivor’s gender transition. Described as the queer love story of the year, The Making of Pinocchio, which is told through the magical story of a lying puppet who wants to be a ‘real boy’, poses the question – what does it truly take to tell your truth?

Set in a film studio crafted from real wood, fake wood and real fake wood, you’re invited to go behind the scenes of Rosana and Ivor’s tender and composite relationship, which further is enriched by rich scenography designed by Tim Spooner, layered sound by Yas Clarke, lights by Jo Palmer and cinematography from Kirstin McMahon and Jo Hellier.

Shifting between fantasy and authenticity, humour and intimacy, The Making of Pinocchio is an unapologetically celebratory and complex work by and for trans and Queer people, which is not to be missed.

This funny, clever and thoughtful production will make its Australian exclusive debut as part of Brisbane Festival, at Brisbane Powerhouse. To avoid missing out, head on over to the Brisbane Powerhouse website to grab your tickets.
