Five decades of history go up for auction in Institute’s winter gala

Australia’s oldest independent gallery, the Institute of Modern Art (IMA), will host its Winter Gala and Benefit Auction next week, exhibiting leading Australian artists as well as major international works shown over their 46-year history.

The event will honour of two leading contemporary Australian artists, conceptual painter Jenny Watson and the late Laurie Nilsen, a leading Indigenous artist from Roma.

The Winter Gala and Benefit Auction is the Institute of Modern Art’s primary fundraising event, with this year’s iteration containing 30 artworks from the IMA’s 46 year history, exhibited at The Calile Hotel’s Grand Room.

Pieces by leading Australian artists will be auctioned including urban Indigenous artist Vernon Ah Kee, renowned Hazara artist Khadim Ali, Mikala Dwyer, Yhonnie Scarce, Judy Watson, Richard Bell, Dale Harding, Daniel Boyd and Tracey Moffatt.

Major international works by Serbian artist Marina Abramović, who refers to herself as ‘the grandmother of performance art’, Singaporean contemporary artist Heman Chong, as well as works by Marianna Simnett and Yvonne Todd will also be auctioned.

IMA Director Liz Nowell said she was thrilled to announce the return of the prestigious Winter Gala and Benefit Auction. 

“The return of the annual Winter Gala and Benefit Auction celebrates the contribution made by contemporary art in Australia and supports the continuation of IMA’s mission to be Queensland’s leading independent forum for the creation of new works and transformative opportunities that benefit artists and the wider audience alike,” Ms Nowell said.

The event will play host to performances by artists and musicians such as Caitlin Franzmann, Rhett Hammerton, Justene Williams, and THICC SHAKE, with music by DJs Levi Whyte and Sweaty Baby.

Attendees will also be able to sample the best of James Street’s restaurants, with SK Steak and Oyster, sAme sAme, Bianca, Hellenika, and Jocelyn’s Provisions joining forces for the first time to cater the event.

The collection will be previewed at the IMA on 14 June with an in-house conversation led by art collector Brian Tucker on how to build an art collection.

For the first time, the collection will be available to view online for the interstate art collectors who cannot travel to the gallery in person.

Bidding will open from Monday 14 June to Friday 18 June via the online auction platform imabids.com, with the Benefit Auction closing the Winter Gala event on 18 June.

The 2021 IMA Gala and Benefit Auction is on Friday 18 June from 6:30pm at The Calile Hotel, Fortitude Valley. Secure tickets, purchase raffle tickets and register for the online auction at the Institute of Modern Art’s website.
