Local supply chains keep Dorsett Hotel soaring on Gold Coast

The Star casino’s new Dorsett Hotel on the Gold Coast is leading a building boom in residential and major projects in Queensland despite the devastating impacts of COVID-19.

The jump in building activity has been largely attributed to state and federal government COVID-19 economic stimulus measures including the state’s Building Acceleration Fund and Accelerated Works Program, and national schemes including first home buyer grants and the HomeBuilder programs.

But the key to enabling the 53-storey Dorsett hotel to keep moving ahead isn’t national economic stimulus. Rather, it’s staying local.

The Star Entertainment Group CEO Matt Bekier said despite the significant impacts of the global coronavirus pandemic and the shutdown of The Star Gold Coast property, construction on the Dorsett hotel and apartment tower remains on track.

He said 14 storeys have been completed out of the total 53 storeys, with an average of 220 construction workers on site daily.

A significant reason the project’s delivery timeline is staying intact is that feature elements of the podium’s façade and the bridge linking the new tower to the existing casino property are manufactured locally in south east Queensland, reducing the risk of supply chain hold ups caused by coronavirus, he said.

Bekier said using locally-manufactured products also had the benefit of keeping locals in jobs and businesses operational during the coronavirus crisis while other sectors are suffering severe downturns.

“Despite the devastating impacts of COVID-19, we have been able to continue construction unimpeded and remain on target for a 2022 completion,” Bekier said.

“New tourism infrastructure will be crucial to the sector’s and the economy’s recovery.”

The Dorsett is part of The Star’s $6 billion invested in tourism and infrastructure projects across the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

When complete, it will contain 423 one and two-bedroom apartments, to be known as The Star Residences Gold Coast, above 316 hotel rooms of the first Dorsett to be developed in Australia.

The podium, when completed, will consist of the Dorsett hotel reception and lobby, The Star Residences Gold Coast lobby, a new food and beverage promenade that will connect the tower to the original resort complex, and additional car parking.

Level six of the podium will include resort pools and sun decks, a sunrise deck, new food and beverage outlets and a sunset lawn and events area.

Works on the podium façade will be completed in October this year.
