The seven travellers were located by police from the air in the remote Goldfields region late on Wednesday, with arrangements being made on Thursday morning to return them to the regional centre of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, east of Perth.

Provisions were also being dropped to the group.

The two elderly men, an elderly woman and four children aged 12 to 17 set off in two cars from Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Sunday.

They were meant to drive about 650km northeast to Tjuntjuntjarra but hadn’t been seen or heard from.

A break in the weather meant police were able to resume an air search on Wednesday after efforts were hampered by storms and flooding the previous two days.

Improved conditions meant several aircraft were deployed to search the area by afternoon after winds and rain meant a plane looking for the group could only stay in the air for about an hour on Tuesday.

A warning for heavy rain has been issued over the state’s southeast in parts of the Goldfields and South Interior.

Flooding continues in the state’s north, with warnings issued for Fitzroy Crossing, Noonkanbah, Looma and Willare in parts of Kimberley on Thursday.

A major road connecting large parts of remote WA was also closed due to the weather.

However the Eyre Highway between Norseman and Eucla, in the Goldfields, was made accessible to vehicles again on Wednesday.

A monsoon trough has redeveloped over northern Australia, bringing showers, rain, thunderstorms and a risk of tropical cyclones to the Top End, northern WA and Far North Queensland.
