Cutting down a plantation pine from any of the State’s managed forests is a breach of the Forestry Act 1959 and is not worth the risk, according to Agriculture Minister Mark Furner.

For those tempted to pinch a tree for Christmas day, a first offence carries a penalty of $14,375 while second offences just about double to $28,700.

Popular hot spots targeted by people helping themselves to pine trees for Christmas include the State forests that line the Bruce Highway between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

The right to remove trees or timber from these areas lies exclusively with the plantation licensee, HQPlantations.

Furner said it was a far better option to purchase trees from plant and nursery owners.

“Queensland’s nursery industry is a key part of the state’s horticulture industry with a $1billion contribution to the economy and supporting up to 6000 good jobs.

“Let’s all have a merry Christmas and support these great businesses while we’re at it.”
