The 44-year veteran of the Queensland Service replaces Katarina Carroll, who did not seek an extension of her contract earlier this year. Gollschewski, a recipient of the Australian Police Medal,  will become Queensland’s 21st Commissioner.

Taking over the role in the midst of an unprecedented youth crime wave, he said it was his ambition not only to make Queenslanders safe, but for them to feel safe.

“I am honoured to lead an exceptional organisation dedicated to keeping Queensland safe,” Gollschewski said.

“Policing is in my blood, having come from a police family and serving as a proud member of the QPS for more than 44 years.

“The QPS is a growing organisation with new and varied challenges on the horizon, however, our people are incredibly committed and we will continue to build on our achievements while delivering high quality services.

“Our primary focus is about ensuring the community is safe and feels safe while also making sure our workforce is supported and feels supported.”

Premier Steven Miles, in announcing the appointment, said had great respect for the new Commission after working closely with him during the pandemic.

“I am very pleased to announce Mr Gollschewski as Queensland’s new Police Commissioner.

“I worked closely with Steve during COVID and he is an extraordinarily competent and experienced leader.

“As Acting Commissioner he acted quickly to initiate new statewide police operations including Operation Whiskey Legion.

“Under his strong leadership, these operations have shown early signs of success significantly disrupted and prevented crime.

“My government will continue to listen to Commissioner Gollschewski and the Queensland Police Service, and together we will deliver a comprehensive and action focused community safety plan.

“Under a government I lead, Police will be provided every possible support in their dedicated efforts to keep the community safe.”
