ARM said the poll, which was conducted in early April, found that 60 per cent wanted an Australian chosen by Australians.

A referendum held in 1999 voted against a republic, but the Albanese Government has revived the issue and even appointed an assistant minister for the republic. However, the Government has also said it would not be an issue for its first term.

The death of Queen Elizabeth had also revived debate.

The poll found the younger generation, aged 18 to 24, were strongly opposed to the monarchy’s continued role with almost 70 per cent supporting an Australian in the role. The 25 to 34 year olds had a similar belief but support for the Australian model slipped as people aged, but was still supported by the majority even among those aged 65 and over.

It was slightly more popular among males, than females.

ARM co-chair Nova Peris said the coronation of Prince Charles on May 6 should be the last time a monarch was crowned as King or Queen of Australia.

“Australians are now well and truly ready to embrace a more equal future where all Australians are treated equally under our constitution,” Peres said.

Monarchy is all about entrenched privilege, about rule by Kings and Queens over and above the Australian people. It has no place in a democracy or a nation that prides itself on equality, on multiculturalism or equal opportunity for all its people.”

ARM co-chair Craig Foster said the coronation served as a reminder that Australians had no choice at all about who our Head of State is and highlighted the need for change.

“It’s time our head of state was an Australian, chosen by us, accountable to us and serving all of us” he said.
