Aaron Peter James Wilson, 35, faced Brisbane District Court on Monday after pleading guilty to 10 counts of burglary and stealing, and four counts of fraud.

Crown prosecutor Stipe Drinovac said Wilson committed the offences between February and August, 2021 at homes across Brisbane’s northern outskirts, stealing more than $271,450 worth of goods.

“(Wilson) was in custody for almost five of those months, so effectively it’s a one-month crime spree,” Drinovac said.

Drinovac said Wilson had targeted valuables in the homes as well as using bank and credit cards to make $1500 worth of purchases and selling stolen gold at a pawn shop for $880.

Wilson’s barrister Kate Fuller said her client’s offending had been driven by his drug addiction, which had developed from an “extremely prejudicial” childhood where he did not know his father and his mother was jailed when he was aged 13.

“He is very motivated to seek out assistance and has had little opportunity in the past as he has spent most of life in jail,” Fuller said.

Judge Michael Burnett said he would have been more sympathetic towards Wilson if not for his 122 prior convictions including an incident where he cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet.

“You have a criminal history that runs to 80 pages … Unfortunately for you, you have spent a great deal of your life cycling in and out of prison: 15 of the last 18 years,” Judge Burnett said.

“There’s an overriding community need for protection – particularly from someone who has shown willingness to commit offences on bail and parole.”

Wilson was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment with his eligibility date for parole set to Monday in recognition that he had already served 653 days in custody. But he will remain in jail pending any application for release.
