Manpreet Singh Brar was driving 25km/h over the speed limit when he went through the intersection in Kallangur, north of Brisbane on November 1, 2020.

Confronting dashcam footage played in a Brisbane court on Thursday shows his car ploughing into the side of another vehicle that moved into the intersection after the light turned green.

Both cars then hit Ian Seibel and his wife Paula as they crossed the road with their dog.

The court was told Brar, now 33, was travelling at 85km/h in a 60km/h zone and did not brake before the crash.

Seibel, 51, was flung over both vehicles and died in hospital five days later, while the other driver Maria Garcia spent weeks in hospital, requiring extensive surgery.

Paula Seibel says she never thought a Sunday morning walk with her husband of 29 years would result in his death.

The couple had been planning a special trip to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.

“I am beyond angry that I have not had the opportunity to spend the rest of my life with this kind, loving gentle giant,” she said in a statement provided to the court.

Seibel stood in court with a poster of photos of her husband when Brar was brought in for sentencing.

“I am here today for Ian, as his advocate and one of the people who loved him and want his life to be acknowledged,” she said.

The court heard Brar had driven unlicensed from 2016 and started using drugs after losing his job during the pandemic.

He was fatigued at the time of the crash and had used cocaine days before.

Brar was released on bail after being charged and not allowed to drive.

But a year later he was pulled over while driving, first giving police a false name then saying he did not know his licence was suspended.

He claimed to be doing food deliveries at the time.

Brar pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and grievous bodily harm, and unlicensed driving.

His guilty plea was taken account with Brisbane District Court Judge Katherine McGinness sentencing him to five years behind bars, suspended after serving 20 months.

Brar has been in custody since his bail was revoked about six months ago.

“No sentence I impose can turn back time or can alleviate in any way the profound pain and enduring heartache that Ms Seibel or Ms Garcia or family and friends will continue to suffer,” Judge McGinness said.

She disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence.

Mr Seibel’s son Aaron said he was enraged that Brar continued to drive after the crash and the family felt “very thoroughly beaten” by the sentence.

“I can’t put it into words how disappointed I am,” he told reporters outside court.

The court heard Brar is in Australia on a partner visa that would automatically be cancelled due to his conviction.

Once released he is expected to be deported to India, leaving his wife and two children – one born last week – in Brisbane.
