No house, no worries: Minister says wait for public housing inflated

Queensland’s housing minister has downplayed the scale of the state’s housing crisis, saying the waiting list is likely inflated, ahead the release of a key report on housing policy.

The state’s auditor-general is due to hand down a report on Tuesday on how the Palaszczuk government is providing housing for vulnerable Queenslanders.

The government has promised to build 7400 homes by 2026, but critics say that won’t be enough with 50,000 people currently on the waiting list.

Housing Minister Leeanne Enoch has promised to “absolutely” act on any findings made in the report, but has played down the scale of the crisis.

She says the waiting list is not as big as it appears because some people on it may be in the same household, so don’t need separate homes.

Enoch also says almost 21 per cent of people on the list either couldn’t be contacted or were no longer eligible for social housing last year.

“I need that register to be the sharpest tool it possibly can be right now because families need support, and we need to know exactly who needs that support right now, today,” she said.

Liberal National Party housing spokesman Tim Mander urged the government to act on the auditor-general’s findings.

He says a Commonwealth report last year said Queensland had added 1000 bedrooms over the previous five years, when the list had grown by 20,000 people.

“At a time when working families on dual incomes are forced to live in cars or tents, every suggestion to improve the situation must be taken on board,” Mander said in a statement.

“We haven’t built enough homes in Queensland to keep pace with our surging population.”

The LNP wants the government to release more land for social housing and partner with the community housing sector.
