The Bureau of Meteorology said the strong winds combined with saturated ground from recent wet weather meant there was a strong risk of trees toppling onto power lines.

The winds have also played havoc at Brisbane Airport, with nearly a dozen flights cancelled and other flights delayed.

Temperatures across the region have plummeted, with centres such as Amberley and the Scenic Rim the worst affected. The bureau says it will get even colder in coming days due to a trough making its way up from southern states nd a deep low in the Tasman Sea.

It said the gusty conditions were expected to ease by Tuesday afternoon but would return overnight.

Energex reported more than 15,000 homes in SEQ without power by 11am on Tuesday, with the worst affected areas including Forest Lake, Camira, Kingston and Kooralbyn.
