The 35-year-old was swept into the water at Miami Beach after trying to help a fisherman who was knocked over by a wave about 6pm on Thursday, Queensland Police said.

It was still half an hour off sunset and almost an hour from last light when the man went missing, but an extensive search failed to find him before dark.

Police in all-terrain vehicles are patrolling the shoreline on Friday while water police vessels search the sea.

Police were called to Lifeguard Tower 22 near Marine Parade just after 6pm on Thursday following reports a wave knocked a man over while he was fishing and he could not regain his footing.

Gold Coast chief lifeguard Chris Maynard told ABC Gold Coast lifeguards were on the scene with police last night.

Earlier there had been some confusion over who was missing after police initially reported it was the fisherman.

“We’re focusing on the tragedy itself and the search is continuing for the person,” Maynard said.

“We’ve been here since first light looking for the person in the area.”

The search resumed at first light on Friday morning.
