The Bureau of Meteorology says it has particular concerns about border towns in souther Queensland such as Goondiwindi and Stanthorpe, where residents can expect the current rain torrent to extend into Friday.

In south-east Queensland, the Wyaralong and Wappa dams are spilling as thunderstorms swept across the region on Thursday afternoon.

The bureau warned that severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Ipswich and Wacol amd were moving southeast tewards Jimboomba and Logan Village.

“Damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely,” it said.

About 46mm of rain was recorded in 30 minutes recorded at Mt Stradbroke near Marburg.

“People in southern Queensland, particularly in communities close to the NSW border such as Goondiwindi, should prepare for heavy rain and possible flooding now, “ the bureau said in a statement released on Thursday afternoon.

“Intense rainfall is possible and could cause river flooding which could last well into next week as flood peaks move downstream.

“Dangerous flash flooding is a key risk factor for today and tomorrow and has already been observed in areas of southern Queensland.”

Some homes in Roma were damaged when a severe` storm hit the town on Wednesday.

Across the state, the RACQ said about 140 roads were closed due to flooding.

The bureau said most NSW, Victoria, the ACT and South Australia would also be hit with severe weather over coming days.

It said days would be much cooler next week, with temperatures of about six to 10 degrees below average forecast.
