Lions pack their bags for a COVID-safe haven – in Melbourne

Brisbane Lions players are packing their bags before making an expected shift to Melbourne due to Queensland’s developing COVID-19 situation.

The Lions are set to play Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday and are now likely to fly to Victoria on Tuesday afternoon as fears grow south-east Queensland is about to be placed into lockdown.

Queensland recorded two new local coronavirus cases on Monday, with more than 160 returned mine workers being tested.

State premier Annastacia Palasczcuk is expected to give a press conference to update the situation at 11am on Tuesday.

Brisbane were originally set to travel on Wednesday for their clash with the Crows in South Australia.

The situation is almost certain to impact Thursday’s clash between Gold Coast and Richmond, which has been scheduled at this stage to be played at Metricon Stadium.

It’s understood the Suns have also been told to prepare to depart Queensland, leaving their round 16 fixture up in the air.

Western Australia’s announcement on Monday night of a four-day lockdown is set to create headaches for the AFL, casting further doubt over Fremantle’s clash with Carlton in Perth on Saturday.

West Coast were due to travel to Victoria this week before Sunday’s clash with Sydney, which has been relocated to Geelong amid the NSW capital city’s two-week lockdown.
