Luck of the Irish: Hotel and apartment tower planned for key Fortitude Valley site

A planned hotel and apartment complex to be built on the site of the old Dooleys Hotel in Brunswick St is being promoted by developers as a showpiece that would complete the southern entry into the Valley entertainment precinct.

Developer Brenzil Pty Ltd has applied to build a 29-storey apartment tower and hotel on the corner of Brunswick and McLachlan Sts.

The site was long the home of Dooley’s Hotel, but was most recently the location of the Flying Cock pub and TCB nightclub, which closed in 2019.

In the development application lodged with Brisbane City Council, consultants Urbis said the new complex would overcome the “hostile environment” created by one of the city’s busiest intersections.

“The proposed development builds upon the revitalisation of Brunswick St and fosters a more inviting streetscape outcome in this precinct of the Valley and allows for the continued growth of the 24/7 economy in the Valley,” it said.

“It does this by creating a more pleasant daytime experience without impacting the entertainment offer the Valley is famous for, creating landmark architecture and anchoring the entrance to the inner city.”

The completed building would have 156 hotel rooms and 120 residential units.

The lower two levels of the building will house shops, restaurants and a bar.
