While the NSW government has so far given around $500 million in travel and hospitality vouchers to all eligible residents, the more limited Queensland scheme requires people to effectively enter a draw to win prize money. The government has previously used unmet demand for vouchers as a way of demonstrating interest in Queensland tourism, despite calls for more funding.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk took to social media this morning to drum up interest in the scheme: “Don’t miss out!”

Registrations open next Tuesday, giving people 72 hours to apply for one of 30,000 Brisbane travel experience vouchers valued at $100 each, or one of 600 Whitsunday vouchers valued at $200 each.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, whose council has partnered with the government to deliver the vouchers, encouraged regional Queenslanders to visit the state capital.

“Brisbane is as a vibrant modern city that has undergone a significant transformation in recent years with a heap of new hotels, attractions and vibrant precincts added that have changed the face of our city,” Schrinner said.

“If it’s been a while since your last visit, you’ll be blown away by how Brisbane and the surrounding regions on our doorstep have evolved.”

The Palaszczuk government first gave news of the vouchers to local tabloid The Courier-Mail, after the newspaper shamed two ministers for holidaying in NSW and questioned Labor’s priorities.

Cairns vouchers have previously been offered and the government plans to roll out vouchers for the Gold Coast in the coming weeks, taking its contribution to $7.2 million.
