Head in the clouds: How nightclub micro-brewery is going through the roof

Valley nightspot Cloudland has won council approval to build a new rooftop bar and micro-brewery in the latest sign that the craze for craft beer shows no sign of easing.

The approval makes way for a major extension to the Ann St watering hole, with plans for a new floor, terrace area and rooftop to be added to the existing building.

Cloudland is one of several event venues and bars owned by the Katarzyna Group, which also runs Birdees and the Empire Hotel in The Valley.

The plans will increase the building’s height to six stories, with documents lodged with Brisbane City Council suggesting a three-month construction schedule.

The Queensland Government has recently signalled its intention to encourage the growth local craft brewing industry, introducing an artisan liquor licence last month.

The Government estimates the craft brewing industry is worth more than $62 million to the state’s economy and employs around 1700 people.

It has encouraged local councils to encourage the development of the industry through modifying their planning schemes to recognise their low to medium impact.
