Premier warns danger not over as police focus on causeway in flood death

A man who’s body was found in a submerged ute may have tried to drive across a flooded causeway in southeast Queensland.

Police are investigating the death of David Hornman, who was found inside his ute in a flooded creek near Lamington National Park on Wednesday morning.

The 38-year-old husband and father had been reported missing and the police probe has centred on the Coburg Road Causeway, which crosses Canungra Creek, between 5am and 7am on Monday.

“Police are interested in obtaining vision of the weather conditions in the area particularly near Coburg Road causeway between 5am and 7am on March 22 as well as any vision capturing a white Isuzu utility heading down Coburg Road towards Canungra within those times,” detectives said in a statement on Thursday.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has also warned Queenslanders the danger is not over as water continues to make its way through flooded areas for several days.

“A major flood warning remains for the Logan River and a minor flood warning remains for the Albert River,” she told parliament on Wednesday.

Despite March rainfall records falling in many places, the southeast’s major dams received only relatively modest top-ups, pushing the region’s water grid to 58.6 per cent of capacity, up 4.6 per cent in the past week.

The automatic trigger point for water restrictions is 50 per cent, and the southeast’s largest dam, Wivenhoe, is only 37 per cent full.

But it was a different story further inland, in the Southern Downs town of Stanthorpe, which has been trucking in drinking water for more than a year.

Stanthorpe’s reservoirs, including the essentially empty Storm King Dam, are now at 100 per cent, with Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi telling the ABC it has “rained hope”.

State Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan said it would be some time before there was a comprehensive tally of flooded properties and vehicles lost to floodwaters.
