The 25-year-old man went missing while swimming with friends at Surfers Paradise on the weekend.

Police were called at 2.30am on Sunday when the Brisbane man did not return to the beach after his swim.

His body was found at Mermaid Beach on Monday morning, police said.

The group encountered rough waters and tough conditions, Queensland Police Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler earlier told reporters.

“I’m advised that a number of people in that group came into difficulty whilst they were swimming,” he said.

“The conditions really weren’t set up for swimming, particularly at night.”

Another man was treated on the beach.

The group had travelled from Brisbane for a celebration.
