Former bikie Shane Bowden was killed at his Gold Coast home in the second assassination attempt on him this year.

The 48-year-old, whose offending received national prominence and who caused a COVID-19 scare in Queensland, was shot dead at Cox Rd, Pimpama, just after midnight on Monday.

Bowden had survived an earlier assassination attempt in Melbourne on July 1.

Detective Inspector Brendan Smith says Bowden was attacked by three people after arriving home from the gym about 12.10am.

“He’s driven into the driveway, and the assailants have run in and shot him multiple times,” Det Supt Smith told media.

“It clearly seems he’s been ambushed.”

A short time later a burned out car was found at Mirambeena Drive, Pimpama, about six minute’s drive away.

Bowden was once part of the Finks “terror team” and jailed over the Gold Coast’s “ballroom blitz” brawl in which three people were shot and two stabbed in 2006.

Bowden was fined $750 earlier this month for breaching coronavirus quarantine travelling from Victoria to Queensland.

The 48-year-old travelled from Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne on August 31 but provided false information on his border declaration.

He’d returned to Queensland to recover from infected gunshot wounds after being targeted in a drive-by shooting on July 1.

Smith says Bowden’s death illustrates how gangs operate.

“It is important that people understand that these gangs are criminals, they don’t take fluffy toys to hospital, they are criminal gangs who survive on retribution, violence and threats and if anyone thinks anything otherwise, they’re an idiot,” he said.

“It’s not something you expect to happen in your home, but dare I say, and nobody deserves to die in this manner, but you live by the sword, you die by the sword.”
