A police spokesman said officers were called to Surround Street at Dakabin shortly after midnight following a disturbance involving a man and a woman.

Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said when police arrived, the woman was in another house seeking refuge and the man, 27, was acting aggressively and armed with knives.

He said officers tried to negotiate with the man and tasered him, but it had no effect.

“Unfortunately police were forced to discharge their firearms. A number of shots entered the man and he went to the ground,” Detective Superintendent Fleming said.

“Care was offered to him and QAS — our ambulance — were called [and] sadly he has since died.

“As is standard in all of these matters we have our Ethical Standards Command and the CCC [Crime and Corruption Commission] oversighting and a full investigation is underway.

“We will be preparing a report for the coroner in terms of the man’s death and the circumstances leading up to that and the interaction with the lady who was with him.

“We will allege that she has suffered injury as a result of an incident between them.

“It’s very unfortunate the man has died but it was a serious incident that had police attending tonight.”

Neighbour Patrick Iverson was woken up by the commotion about 12:30pm.

He said he heard three bangs but did not think much of it.

“We just thought it was the neighbours having friends over,” he said.

“There was a few bangs going off in the street and [I’ve] woken up to that and it was a lot of swearing afterwards.

“I didn’t think anything of it at first and came out a bit later on to find, you know, the street filled with cop cars and ambulances.”
