Emergency crews attend the scene of a triple road fatality near Chinchilla.

The accident happened in wet conditions near Chinchilla, west of Brisbane, about 5.50pm Thursday, police say.

“It would appear the vehicle has overtaken another car at speed … the vehicle has lost control and sadly run off the road and collided with a tree,” Acting-Superintendent Gareth Channells told reporters on Friday.

“The vehicle caught fire sometime after … sadly we have lost three lives”

Two men, aged 35 and 36, from Tara, and a 40-year-old Dalby man died at the scene.

The female driver, 42, sustained serious abdominal and chest injuries and was taken to Princess Alexandria Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

A man seated in the front passenger seat suffered minor injuries and was able to climb from the badly damaged car and help the woman.

“I suspect road conditions may have played a part. We had rain pretty much all day, the roads were still damp and wet,” Superintendent Channells said.

The forensic crash unit is investigating and no one has been charged.
