Water police got a call for help at about 3:.00am on Monday, saying the worker had fallen overboard, off Point Arkwright.

Crew members from the trawler spotted the man in the water but he vanished soon afterwards.

Water police and a helicopter have been searching the area, where conditions are challenging.

Mike Middleton from Mooloolaba Coastguard has told the ABC it’s easy to see how such incidents happen.

“Fishermen often lean over to connect nets and things and the seas are quite rough at the moment at two metres and we’ve got 15-25 knots coming up.”
