The plane, believed to be a Cessna 404 twin-engine piston aircraft, was found on a beach about 5km south in the Lockhart River township at 1.20pm.

It has been reported that the plane was carrying five passengers.

Two helicopters and a rescue jet from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, joined emergency services searching for the aircraft.

The river is in the same region where the Bureau of Meteorology has warned of high winds and flooding rains due to a tropical low that is expected to develop into a cyclone over the Coral Sea at the weekend.
