Did anything good come out of 2020?

We learnt to appreciate our natural world after bushfires and COVID-19 focused us back on to our own back yard of Queensland

What’s your favourite summer memory?

When the summer storms season starts up and that smell of first rains.

Are you a summer or a winter person?

Definitely winter – I live near Binna Burra in the Scenic Rim and we are always 5-6 degrees colder up here, so it’s great for walking.

How do you stay resilient during periods of change, like the year just gone?

It’s been a tumultuous 17 months: since September 2019 when a bushfire destroyed seven houses in my street, the main lodge buildings and my original family home at Binna Burra. Then COVID hit my international walking tour business. It’s been THE hardest year since going through treatment for ovarian cancer five years ago.

I learnt to ocean swim and ran a half-marathon in 2019 and that has helped me know this is not a sprint. We need to settle into the new pace of life – it’s not always comfortable – but slowing down and breathing seems to be the key.

Who were your heroes of 2020?

The firies who fought so hard right through the Black Summer then the nurses, paramedics and doctors around the world who have been dealing with the frontline of COVID

What’s your secret ambition?

To write a book, get a good camera again, remember how to throw and fire pottery and get back to my creativity.

The Scenic Rim, anywhere with mountains. Then a quick plunge in a lake or ocean.

What are you hoping for in 2021?

To keep running our travel / walking tour company – rediscovering southeast Queensland and maybe other states again. As for international travel – that’s a 2022 luxury!

What have you been watching on television/streaming services lately?

David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet, The Queen’s Gambit and Big Weather and How to Survive It.

Any people or businesses to watch in 2021?

The people and businesses of the Scenic Rim. We are ready to welcome people for day adventures, weekend getaways or longer explorations.
