D-day arrives for Queensland’s decision on opening NSW border

D-Day has arrived for the Queensland government’s decision on the border re-opening, as Gladys Berejiklian defends her own decision to keep NSW closed to Victoria.

The NSW premier has been at loggerheads with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk over the border, saying the bar she has set for resuming travel between the states is too high.

With all states except Queensland and Western Australia reopening to NSW and an election only a day away, Palaszczuk is under increasing pressure to relax border restrictions.

The premier will consult with Queensland’s Chief Health Officer and make an announcement by noon, she promised on Thursday.

It comes as Berejiklian refused to guarantee she would reopen NSW to Victoria by Christmas despite low case numbers.

NSW will wait at least two weeks to see how Victoria deals with the inevitable outbreaks as restrictions ease.

“The real test is how do you deal with that. Are you able to control them? Are you able to find the sources of those infections?” she told reporters on Thursday.

“Once we see evidence of that for two-or-three weeks after the restrictions are eased well then we’ll rely on the health advice.”

NSW recorded three new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 – all from the same household – and one case in a returned traveller in hotel quarantine on Thursday.

Another locally acquired case – recorded after the 8pm cut off – will be included in Friday’s numbers.

Two of the new cases were students from the Hoxton Park campus of the Malek Fahd Islamic School, in Sydney’s west, which will close for 14 days.

A public health alert has also been issued for F45 in Leppington in Sydney’s southwest, after a confirmed case visited almost every day for two weeks.

An infected person also recently attended several venues across Sydney including Flip Out Prestons Indoor Trampoline Park, Jasmins Lebanese Restaurant in Liverpool, Westfield Bondi Junction, Watsup Brothers kebab shop in Condell Park, Ali Baba Charcoal Chicken in Auburn and Carnes Hill Marketplace.
