Kiss me Tate: Mayor ready to rock in stadium’s concert debut

While the rock gods of Kiss landed in Melbourne on Wednesday for their last ever Australian tour, it is the Gold Coast that is celebrating stealing the show.

In his inimitable style, and one that would perhaps see any other city flinching in an advanced state of cringe, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate went all ‘God of Thunder’ to promote ticket sales to the 10 September Kiss concert that was transferred from Townsville to the Gold Coast.

Channelling Kiss co-founder and rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley, Tate said the Gold Coast was partying every day over the venue change that would be a “very good fit” for the city and the epic rockers.

It is the first time the Gold Coast’s Cbus Super Stadium will be used as a major concert venue.

As the only regional performance of the Australian leg of Kiss’s End of the Road Tour, the Gold Coast secured the gig that was originally scheduled for North Queensland Stadium in Townsville because the date clashed with the North Queensland Cowboys needing the venue for the NRL playoffs.

“Any time the Gold Coast starts out as Plan B, we end up as Plan A. Just like the Olympics,” Tate said.

Brisbane will host the only other Queensland performance by Kiss on 6 September.

Kicking off at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Saturday night, the Kiss tour is expected to celebrate the band’s trademark full make up, costumes, flames, and fake blood.

Formed in 1973 and having first toured Australia in 1980, the band with more than 100 million album sales will play from a 50-year set list covering decades of hits.

Kiss will finish their final ever tour with shows in the US after the Australia concert leg.

“It’s going to be good fun when I arrive home tonight and surprise (wife) Ruth,” Tate said. “She won’t know who it is until she hears my voice.”
