Edinburgh, Adelaide, Wynnum: Fringe Festival backs the bay

Wynnum Fringe began in 2020 as a way to employ local artists doing it tough. Now it returns in November to drop a spiegeltent in the heart of Wynnum and stage a new music festival headlined by Daryl Braithwaite.

Founded by local performer Tom Oliver, this year’s Festival will take over the heart of Wynnum for six full days across laneway activations, food trucks, outdoor bars, free local performances and a new one-day festival Rock the Bay.

The horses will descend on Wynnum on 9 October as Daryl Braithwaite headlines Rock the Bay alongside soul singer Kate Ceberano, ‘90s pop duo Bachelor Girl and singer-songwriter Sarah MacLeod of The Superjesus.

Northern Territory’s Wildfire Manwurrk will perform for the first time outside Arnhem Land with the hard-rocking family band performing in their critically endangered native languages of Kune, Dalabon and Rembarrnga.

Local singer-songwriters Luke Kennedy and Mark Sholtez and folk-pop duo Women in Docs will also appear alongside Ella Fence and Lucid Safari.

Wynnum-based producer, performing artist, and self-described “music tragic” Oliver said he loves the vibe of music festivals and wanted to bring that to his hometown.

“For the performers and audience, it’s a great opportunity to celebrate and support the music industry, with classic tracks performed by our heroes from the ‘80s and ‘90s alongside new tunes from local talent creating the next phase of our musical culture,” he said.

“Music allows people to escape the everyday and I’m keen to create these opportunities where we can come together as a community and just have a good time, especially right now.”

Brisbane’s only fringe festival was borne as a response to what they call “the big C”, initially holding 50 events over three days which has now expanded into a huge programme of events.

“We’re being ambitious, we’re being bold and we’re being incredibly risky (and risqué) – we’re here to put Wynnum on the global cultural map,” said Oliver.

The Festival will include the Raine & Horne Spiegeltent, which will showcase global disco phenomenon Velvet Rewired, a blend of circus, cabaret and disco described as “a nightclub, a state of mind and a fantasy”, featuring world-renowned vocalist Marcia Hines.

“Wynnum has never had a Spiegeltent – let alone hosted a national production of this magnitude and size – and we’ve curated a three-week program of local music and comedy acts as well. I can’t wait to announce that soon too,” said Oliver.

The programme also includes socially-awkward robot circus show Robot Dance Circus, techsploration theatre Alexa, Turn on the Lights, truth-telling cabaret Lesbian Love Stories, and a performance by Sewer Rat Girl.

“Attendees at this year’s Wynnum Fringe can expect world-class entertainment from local, national and international artists and creators spanning a variety of performance genres from comedy to dance, music to circus and everything in-between,” said Oliver.

“It’s a great opportunity for Wynnum to celebrate what it has to offer and for visitors from Brisbane and beyond to experience this beautiful Bayside suburb on the fringe of the city.”

Rock the Bay is on Saturday 9 October 2021 on the front hill at Iona College, Lindum and Wynnum Fringe 2021 is on from Tuesday 16 November to Sunday 21 November 2021 at various venues, for more information and programming visit their website.
