AFL GRAND FINAL ON THE BIG SCREEN

If you missed out on a ticket to the AFL grand final at the Gabba, you can still catch the big game on the big screen.

Howard Smith Wharves’ River Garden on the East Lawn will be screening the match live on a 5m x 3m LED screen, right on the edge of the Brisbane River.

Food and drink will be available to purchase from noon to 10pm, with the game live from 6.30pm. Visit the Tourism & Events Queensland website for more information.

Brisbane’s Riverstage is also screening the match, with free tickets available from Ticketmaster, and Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast will also be hosting a free Footy Festival tomorrow, including a live broadcast of the grand final.

Gates open at 4pm and there will be NAB AFL Auskick activities for the kids, plenty of food and drinks, music and pre-match entertainment, ahead of the first bounce at 6:30pm.  Entry is free but tickets are limited. Click here to reserve a spot.

MARITIME MUSEUM VP DAY COMMEMORATIONS

This year marks 75 years since two surrenders were signed onboard the quarterdeck of the HMAS Diamantina and the Queensland Maritime Museum will mark the occasion with a live-streamed commemoration from the same position from 10am on Sunday.

The Maritime Museum has partnered with Griffith Film School and media company ZeroDivide to create the multimedia online event, as well as a collection of digital assets as part of a legacy project.

“On August 15, when it was VP Day, we had a small gathering with Bill McDonald who’s the former RAN stoker,” Queensland Maritime Museum chief executive Emma Di Muzio told InQueensland.

“All of this is about commemorating the significance of this event at the time in 1945 and if you want to celebrate anything, it’s peace. That’s why a museum like the Queensland Maritime Museum has a duty to its city, its nation and globally, to educate people and remind them of maritime wartime history but also to signify and tell both sides of the story.

“It’s not about taking sides or celebrating any one side it’s about commemorating and ensuring that people understand what went on.”

The Royal Australian Navy river-class frigate played an important role in the final year of World War II, including taking the surrender of Japanese forces onboard at both Nauru and Ocean Island (now Banaba, Kiribati).

The stream will include oral histories from last two living RAN personnel from HMAS Diamantina’s original commission – 94-year-old McDonald, 94, and Able Seaman James Spotswood, 97.

Di Muzio said the project’s goal was to use new technology – including augmented and virtual reality – to engage and educate audiences about the historic moment in time.

McDonald, who lives north of Brisbane, will also be a special guest at the commemoration, which will also include Australian Defence Force and civic representatives and feature speeches, the laying of wreaths, flag ceremonial, oral history recordings and vintage imagery. The Royal Australian Navy Band Queensland from HMAS Moreton will accompany the service.

Although this is an invitation-only event, the Queensland Maritime Museum is open for visitors on weekends.  Visit the website for more information and to stream Sunday’s event.

HOTA HOSTS SARAH McLEOD

Superjesus singer and guitarist Sarah McLeod has recently relocated to the Sunshine State and the ARIA winner is heading to Home of the Arts (HOTA) on the Gold Coast for an intimate Supper Club session.

McLeod has released three studio albums with The Superjesus (Sumo, Jet Age and Rock Music) and two solo albums (Beauty Was A Tiger and Rocky’s Diner), so expect an eclectic set.

“I find that when I’m playing in The Superjesus, for me it’s more about playing the guitar,” McLeod said.

“My solo shows are a different though, it’s stripped back and focused more on the vocal. I really love the peace in playing solo, to just enjoy the quiet and control the dynamics as I feel them flowing through me. It’s always very impromptu, I just move with the vibe of the room.”

Visit HOTA’s website for tickets.
