First Nations Artisan Markets

Birrunga Gallery and Dining, at 300 Adelaide Street in Brisbane CBD, is relaunching its monthly First Nations Artisan Markets tomorrow morning from 8am.

The markets, which will be held on the second Saturday of every month, showcase a variety of local, unique makers, crafters and designers, with stallholders including Culture Weave, Bomsy Studio, Kakadu Tiny Tots and Nyanda Cultural Tours.

The kitchen’s head chef is preparing a special menu for the occasion, including breakfast fritters with a blend of native spaces.

“We’re all weather – if it’s hot outside it’s cool in here, if it’s cool outside it’s warm in here,” the gallery’s principal artist and co-founder Birrunga Wiradjuri told InQueensland.

“We’ve got plenty of space, we’ve got food, we’re a black organisation anyway and we’re in the CBD,  so we thought, why don’t we just put it on once a month and make it available to those businesses to be here without a fee as a part of our cultural responsibility, but also just being a part of the community. It can’t always be about the coin.”

Burpees for Brain Cancer

Snap Fitness New Farm Club manager Angus Goulding is putting his physical and mental fitness to the test tomorrow to raise awareness – and funds – for brain cancer in memory of his late friend  Matt Hirst, who passed away earlier this year.

Goulding will challenge himself to complete 1986 burpees in honour of his friend’s birth year, followed by a 33km run, Matt’s age, followed by another 2020 burpees recognising the year he passed away, Angus hopes he can raise vital funds for Cure Brain Cancer.

“Anyone who has been through or seen someone go through cancer treatment knows how taxing it is physically and mentally,” Goulding told InQueensland. “So I thought, what can I do that will be both extremely physically and mentally challenging? Burpees and running came straight to my mind as I dislike both and I wanted to replicate just a small portion of the struggle cancer patients go through on a daily basis.”

The event kicks off at 6am at Snap Fitness, New Farm, with a barbecue breakfast, raffles and exercise classes taking place alongside the main event.

Drawn Together will be streamed on QPAC’s website from 10.30am tomorrow morning and will include hosted conversations over morning tea and a variety of performances recorded in the venue’s Concert Hall and venues in Cairns and Townsville.

As well as the conversations, there will be performances by Queensland artists including western classical and traditional Asian fusion-ensemble JADE New World Collective, Babushka Cabaret (pictured), tap-dancing troupe The Brat Pack Tappers, Cairns indie-folk artist Greta Stanley and Townsville musical theatre performer Sarah Murr.

Dagwood dogs and Sundaes

The Ekka might not be going ahead, but if you’re desperate for a Dagwood Dog or a strawberry sundae, head for the hills … Bowen Hills, that is.

For the first time ever, the Ekka’s famous Strawberry Sundaes, Dagwood Dogs and tasting plates are hitting the streets of Brisbane. There will be a drive-through at Brisbane Showgrounds and a pop-up at King Street, Bowen Hills.

Winter Wonderland

South Bank is hosting Snow4Kids, which gives children and families the chance to walk in a winter wonderland, throw snowballs and build snowmen.  Snow4Kids will be operating at one-third of its usual capacity to meet COVID-19 requirements, with 20 zones in the snow garden giving family groups their own designated snow play areas to ensure everyone is socially distancing.  Tickets for 50-minute sessions and there is a 20 per cent discount for Ekka weekend.  Visit snow4kids.com.au/ for details.

You can also some of Brisbane’s best up and coming artists at South Bank today and tomorrow as part of Brisbane City Council’s Sound Society, with performances this afternoon from 4-6pm at Little Stanley Lawns, and tomorrow from 2-5pm at River Quay Green.
