The innovative techniques take into account a patient’s genetic makeup, environment and lifestyle in tailoring treatment.

Genetic Technologies will conduct a 50-patient pilot study at the hospital to establish workflow and reporting.

That study would be used genetype multi-risk tests which the company said was a way to understand a patient’s risk profile for a range of common diseases including: breast cancer, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, coronary artery disease, prostate cancer and type 2 diabetes.

That would be combined with pharmogenomics which is a branch of genetics concerned with the way in which an individual’s genetic attributes affect the likely response to therapeutic drugs.

The hospital’s research manager Michelle Ferrari Cestari said there was a clear vision for a precision medicine clinic that focused on preventative care and creating pathways to the early detection and better treatment of disease.

Genetic Technologies chief executive Simon Morriss said there had been a seismic shift in healthcare with the acceptance that risk assessment tests and pharmogenomics can make.

“Being able to identify those people at higher risk of certain diseases and those who are more likely to respond to appropriate treatments is a major step forward in improving health outcomes,” he said.

Patient recruitment will soo begin for the trial and if it works at the Gold Coast site, it would enable the rollout of additional clinics.
