The survey found confidence increased in NSW but fell in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

The survey finding on the question of whether it was a time to buy a major household item fell 7.6 points after three straight weekly gains.

ANZ senior economist Adelaide Timbrell said consumer confidence was at its lowest since April 2020 and was among the four weakest results since the pandemic.

“Confidence has beena at extremely weak levels for around 15 weeks but has fallen a further 7.2 points in the last six weeks,” she said.

“Confidence fell among renters, outright owners and those paying off their homes though those paying off their homes fell to a record low.”
