The state scored 82 per cent, well ahead of the other states and Carbon Market Institute chief executive John Connor said there had been considerable progress at a state and federal level.

The report said the bar had been lifted and there was a new era of climate ambition.

The report cited the case of the Munda Munda project in southwest Queensland where landowners Anita and Robert Todd started a program on a regeneration carbon farming project as a part of the Queensland Land Restoration Fund.

With a regular income from carbon credits earned from the project as well as from the farming operations, the owners have been able to invest in fencing which has helped control feral goats and pigs.

Stocking rates were also reduced.

As the vegetation returned, the Todds said they had never seen the country look better. Diverse ecosystems had returned along with native flora and fauna.

According to the report, NSW and Queensland continued to have the most carbon credit units issued.

The report said Queensland’s leadership was based on strong capital outlays which included the $100 million that had been spent on 22 carbon projects in the state since 2020.

The state scored its highest marks in the report for policy and ambition as well as transparency and integrity.

Carbon farming refers to managing the land or agriculture to maximise the amount of carbon stores and to minimise the emissions of greenhouse gases.
