So hot right now: Brisbane events to lure one million visitors to the city

Brisbane would draw more than a million people to the city this year to witness sporting, music and cultural events, according to the Brisbane Economic Development Agency.

The throng of visitors would tip an extra $150 million of spending into the city’s economy and follows Time Magazine’s recent endorsement of the city as one of the top places to visit in 2023.

Brisbane’s events have been a long-running replacement for the city’s lack of Sydney-style physical beauty and this year it will host the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Australian PGA (Royal Queensland) and the World Science Festival.

That will bolster the existing NRL Magic Round, Torian Pro (crossfit), and the Brisbane Festival.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the major events were a big driver of economic benefit and encouraged people to stay longer and support local businesses.

He said the events calendar would be supported by an advertising campaign asking: It’s all here, why aren’t you?

BEDA chief executive Anthony Ryan said the events saw sell-out crowds in 2022 and this was expected to occur again this year.

“Attracting a diverse calendar of stellar sporting and cultural major events to the city is a key priority as we prepare for Brisbane’s biggest and greatest global event in nine years,” he said.
