Queensland tourism adds a few more gongs to the collection

The Queensland tourism industry was celebrating a weekend coup by winning awards in 16 out of 25 categories in the national tourism awards.

Gold awards went to Wildcat Mackay for the best new tourism business, Fun Over 50 Holidays won the tour and transport operators award, Big4 Adventure, Whitsunday, won the caravan and holiday parks award and Bli Bli House won gold for hosted accommodation.

Other gold medals went to Bundaberg Rum Distillery Visitor Experience, The Cape York Peninsular Lodge won the 4-4.5 star deluxe accommodation award and the Outback Queensland Masters won best festival and event.

Tourism Queensland chief executive Patricia O’Callaghan said that to be taking home the lion’s share of awards at a national level was an outstanding achievement and showed just how dedicated the Queensland tourism businesses were right across the state.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council chief executive Brett Fraser said it was “phenomenal to see so many of our operators recognised on the national stage”.

“We’ve always known Queensland is home to some of the best events, accommodation providers and experiences in Australia, and now it’s official. For Queensland to be awarded gold, silver or bronze in 16 of the 25 categories is exceptional.
“While all the winners and finalists can be congratulated, we’re especially proud of Queensland’s remarkable success at this years’ national awards.”

Silver awards were won by Spirits of the Red Sand (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island Tourism Experience); Ocean Rafting  (Adventure Tourism), and Quilpie Visitor Information Centre (Museum & Gallery, Visitor Information Services).

Bronze awards went to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (Major Tourist Attractions); Sea World Cruises (Major Tour & Transport Operators); Mitchell Grass Retreat (Unique Accommodation); Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort (Ecotourism); Tourism Tropical North Queensland (Tourism Marketing & Campaigns) and Magnums Unique Accommodation Airlie Beach, (3-3.5 Star Accommodation)
