Appointments: Lawyers get a new leader

A new president for the Queensland Law Society, Bomber gets the trots, Coronado shuffles key jobs, plus local government roles shift and more.

New QLS president

Chloé Kopilović has been named as Queensland Law Society president for 2023.

She has been a director at FC Lawyers and has been a councillor at QLS since 2016.

She is a QUT graduate and has a Masters of Applied Law.

Bomber steps in at the trots

Former TV sports journalist and one-time state MP Chris Bombolas has started his new role as the chief operating officer at Albion Park Harness Racing.

Bombolas was appointed in October.

Before that he was media manager at the Office of Industrial Relations.

Taylor takes on Murweh role

Sabine Taylor has been appointed as Murweh Shire Council’s chief executive officer, replacing the retiring Neil Polglase, who had served on the council for nearly 22 years and as CEO for the last eight years.

The council said Taylor would bring a wealth of experience to the role, having held leadership positions in both local government and the corporate world.

She was previously the director of corporate services at Alice Springs Town Council and was chief risk officer at Telstra Super until 2019.

Councillor quits Livingstone role

Nigel Hutton has resigned as a councillor on the Livingstone Council, effective March 31.

He had served on the council since 2014 and was deputy mayor between 2018 and 2020.

Because his resignation occurred in the final 12 months of his term there would be no by-election but the vacancy would be filled by a “casual” appointment made by remaining councillors.

XPON CFO to retire

Brisbane technology company XPON said Leanne Wolski would retire as chief financial officer at the end of the financial year.

XPON said Wolski had played an integral role in the company, particularly during its initial public offering in 2021.

A recruitment process has begun to replace her.

Qld’s new bio chief

The State Government has appointed Rachel Chay as the new deputy director general and chief biosecurity officer.

Chay started her role this week within the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

She was previously the chief operating officers at Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.

Conry leaves AQC

Australian Pacific Coal is without its executive chairman after David Conry announced his sudden resignation this week.

Independent director Mike Ryan has stepped in as interim chairman and Ayten Saridas, also an independent director, will be interim CEO.

Architects look to Bruhn

University of Queensland’s dean of architecture Cameron Bruhn will become chief executive of the Australian Institute of Architects.

He will take over from interim CEO Barry Whitmore, who stepped in when Julia Cambage resigned more than a year ago.

Events boss walks

The chief executive of Events Management Queensland, Cam Hart, has resigned after 25 years in the role.

Chairman Paul Donovan said Hart’s decision was a “great loss” for the industry.

Hart said it was the right time to move on and hoped he would continue to make contributions to the industry.

Coronado announces succession 

Owners of the Curragh coal mine in central Queensland, Coronado, have announced that chief executive Gerry Spindler would retire from the role and Douglas Thompson would move into the position.

Spindler would become executive chair and chief financial officer Gerhard Ziems would assume an expanded role.

Coronado said Thompson would establish an office in the US where Coronado owns coal operations.

Former Glencore chief executive Sir Michael Davis has also announced his resignation from the board of Coronado.

The coal miner said Davis would not stand for re-election to the board at the end of his term which is scheduled to expire at the company’s annual general meeting in May.

Yeo moves up in Treasury

Matheus Yeo has been appointed as director of intergovernmental relations at Queensland Treasury.

He was previously with the Department of Energy and Public Workers and before that worked at PwC and was an energy market analyst with AEMO.

New justice officer

The State Government has appointed Stephen Tillett as its inaugural First Nations justice officer.

Attorney General Shannon Fentiman said Tillett has broad experience in the criminal justice system.

He worked for more than 20 years with the Queensland Police in communities like Cape York and the Torres Strait.

He had also held senior positions in the public service working on justice programs.

BAC picks Madsen

Brisbane Airports Corporation has appointed Samara Madsen as strategy and delivery manager.

Madsen is a chartered accountant.

She has previously worked with Rennie, Deloitte and Marsh Tincknell.

Richmond Vanadium loses CFO

Interim chief financial officers and company secretary at Richmond Vanadium Julian Tambyrajah has resigned.

The company said Joanne Day, who was joint company secretary, would be responsible for communication with the ASX.

Tambyrajah was returning to his full-time role at Horizon Minerals.
