The company said it was a sign of maturity in the local business which now includes the controversial Carmichael coal mine, a solar farm near Moranbah, Bowen Rail which hauls the coal and the port of Abbot Point.

Internationally, the company is far more diverse with investments in renewables, cement, airports, transmission, agriculture, energy and ports, all of which have Adani in the name. It now has a market value of $US260 billion ($A400 billion) and founder and chairman Gautum Adani is among the world’s richest people.

Bravus had previously been the name of its Australian coal mining operations.

However, Adani’s broader business has been impacted by its association with the coal mine, which has been subjected to a long-running and damaging campaign by environmental activists.

Even after the rebranding of its mining operations under Bravus, the Adani name was still prevalent mainly because of the high profile of the activists’ campaign under the Stop Adani banner.

The decision to kill off the Adani name in Australia also has the affect of distancing the company from the Stop Adani campaign.

The decision also follows the spending of about $7 billion in Australia and it recently transported its 500th cargo from the Carmichael mine to the port.

Bravus executive director Samir Vora said the company was in Australia for the long term and would remain at the forefront of the growing bilateral trade between Australia and India.

“We see a bright future ahead,” Vora said.

“While the new name acknowledges the maturity of our Australian operations, Bravus will also continue to acknowledge and celebrate the ongoing achievements of the Adani Group.”
