SX Global, the latest venture by Gold Coast Suns Chairman and former V8 Supercars supremo Tony Cochrane, secured the rights to the championships for the next 10 years.

The company will lead the championships sanctioned by the world supercross governing body Fédération Internationale de Motocyclismes over 14 events each year, with US$250,000 in prizemoney on offer in each championship round.

Mayor Tom Tate said the win was a “massive coup” for the city, that was ranked 26th in the top sports cities globally for 2022.

Beaten only by the Australian capitals of Melbourne and Sydney in the latest rankings, the Gold Coast was chosen based on international sports federation and sports industry experts’ analysis of the cities most associated with sport.

“Having the world SX headquarters based here will add to our stocks,” Tate said.

“I know Tony has worked hard to secure this…It’ll certainly fill his exhaust pipes.”

Supercross is an off-road motorcycle competition, similar to motocross, but is held in an indoor stadium.

Treasurer Cameron Dick said the Gold Coast landing the gig as global supercross headquarters showed its pulling power as a sporting city.

Dick said he expected supercross and the Gold Coast to attract an even broader fanbase across the world.

“In the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the eyes of the sporting world will turn to Queensland and we want to maximise the long-term economic benefits and job creation opportunities for our state,” Dick said.

SX Global was lured to the city with the support of the State Government’s $520 million Invested in Queensland fund and the City of Gold Coast’s Business Attraction program.
