Vena Energy said it had handed over full operational dispatch rights of the battery to AGL after a 15-year deal was struck.

The battery has the capacity to deliver energy to 57,000 homes.

Head of Vena Energy Australia Owen Sela said the energy storage was a key to addressing intermittency of renewable energy and the Wandoan South BESS (battery energy storage system) would play a role in Australia’s green energy transition.

AGL said the battery would allow it to leverage excess solar generation in Queensland and provide capacity when renewables were not generating.

The battery is the largest in Australia.

Sela said the operational status of the battery would encourage more renewable energy projects.
