The company carried out the test on the weekend and said it believed it would have a product that was fully tested by the end of this year.

The aim of the project is to provide Australia will sovereign missile capability, but it was also likely to be sold to allies, particularly the UK and the US.

The Black Sky missile is believed to have the same capability as the Javelin surface-to-air missile, which is manufactured by the British and is a lightweight and portable missile with a range of about 4500 metres. Black Sky is developing “several iterations” of its missile.

The test firing was aimed at proving the guidance technology of Black Sky’s partners.

“Everything worked according to plan,” a Black Sky spokesman said.

It would now continue with its program of testing.

The success is another boost for the Brisbane defence sector where munitions company Noia has also announced a hiring spree to cope with growth.
