Suncorp has backed a Queensland Government scheme to help lift houses

It follows the announcement on the weekend of $700 million from the State Government to help victims through property buy backs, house raising or retrofitting their homes to deal with future floods.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has written to the Prime Minister on Monday offering to split the funding package 50:50.

The announcement responds to calls made by Suncorp for several years about mitigating the impact of natural disasters. Its bill for natural disasters is expected to be about $1.1 billion with all but $75 million dealt with through re-insurance.

But Suncorp chief executive Steve Johnston said the company would be pushing for multi-year investments rather than a one-off.

Across its brands it has been hit with 38,000 claims from floods and storms and 17,000 from the recent event in Queensland.

“We’re expanding out teams right across the country, providing support to our customers affected by the floods and ensuring they get back on their feet as quickly as possible,” Johnston said.

“We are recruiting 600 extra people to speed the recovery process, from leaders in disaster response and event claims, event response co-ordinators, claims managers and customer service specialists.”
