The documentary Super / Natural has won four nominations and among them is one for outstanding cinematography from Biopixel and Richard Fitzpatrick as well as the team’s camera operators.

Fitzpatrick won an Emmy in 2010 for a Channel 9 documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.

The film is also nominated for outstanding documentary, outstanding sound and outstanding promotional material.

According to company, Fitzpatrick has shot more than 50 films for clients such as the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery Channel and was renowned for filming complex behavioural sequences – including high speed, time-lapse, motion control and underwater – many never seen before.

“Richard has shot many presenter-led programs. (He is) able to switch quickly between topside and underwater filming and with a huge collection of ‘toys’, he brings high production value on fast-paced shoots.”

His role in Super / Natural, which was narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch and produced by James Cameron was for sequences involving a stone fish as well as an epaulette shark but Biopiexel also provided stock footage as well.

Slattery has a passion for the reef and has also provided funding to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. He has also backed projects to develop 1 million square metres of environmentally tolerant reef.

Slattery posted remarkable footage on LinkedIn of some of Biopixel’s recent work including that of a grey nurse shark biting through some of the company’s underwater equipment.
