Lunar New Year
Brisbane continues its path to power and prosperity with another weekend of Lunar New Year celebrations. At Treasury Brisbane, you’ll find a traditional Wishing Tree that’s ready to accept your Year of the Dragon hopes. Whilst in the precinct, devour the delicious dishes of Fat Noodle’s Lunar New Year set menu. For $88 per couple, you can feast on the pan-Asian eatery’s best plates like succulent caramelised pork belly, refreshing green-mango salad and the addictive Vietnamese coffee tiramisu – as well as a complimentary glass of vino. Underground dumpling house Mei Wei as well as the bars of the Treasury are both also offering Lunar New Year specials, so you can toast to new beginnings with mouth-watering fare and cocktails.

On the south side, experience some lively Luner New Year festivities in Sunnybank – known affectionately as Brisbane’s Little Asia. Sunnybank Lunar New Year Rooftop Party returns for another year this Saturday, with an electric line-up of live entertainment, music, traditional performances and lion dancers taking the stage to ring in the Year of the Dragon. Start your evening at one of the many acclaimed Sunnybank nosh spots – many of which will be offering a few celebratory discounts – and finish the night with a fireworks display at the family-friendly rooftop party on Sunnybank Plaza.

Music
Indie-pop duo Client Liaison is bringing its first-ever DJ tour to Fridays Riverside. The new tour sees Harvey and Monte make forays into house beats, bringing their taste for disco and 80s sounds to the decks. The inner-city hotspot is transforming into Club Liaison, ‘where disco, lobsters and dancing unite.’ Catch Client Liaison’s summer DJ party from 8:00 pm this Saturday.

Beat the Sunday scaries at the subtropical dance world of Felons Barrel Hall’s No Tomorrow. This weekend welcomes the beats of German house music legend Ian Pooley – famed for his sessions at Berlin club Berghain. Have a boogie and dance like there’s no tomorrow.

Live events
This weekend, the highly anticipated Beauty and the Beast the Musical finally debuts in Brisbane.  The award-winning show promises plenty of nostalgia, adapting the classic Disney flick for the stage. Experience the magic from Thursday at QPAC and discover the spectacular soundtrack (penned by music-legend Alan Menke), mesmerising production design and the timeless fairy-tale reimagined.

Brace for laughs, folks! Irish-comedian and host of chart-topping podcast ‘Tea With Me‘ Shane Todd is coming to town with his Mummy tour. Fresh from his tenure as Kevin Hart’s UK support act, the observational storyteller brings his biting set to Brisbane Powerhouse this Friday.

This Friday also sees the final night of BrisAsia Stands Up, the comedy show which brings together the immense talent and unique voices of Brisbane’s Asian-Australian stand-up comedians. Back after a sell-out 2023 show, BrisAsia Stands Up promises plenty of laughs with a line-up featuring the best local comics as well as experienced performers. This Friday sees Michael Cho (MC), Ting Lim, Jo Gowda, Ashwin Segkar, Daniel Holt, Jai Selva and Jason Wong tear up the stage.

On Friday, visual art and electronic music collides at Metro Arts’ Full Spectrum. This one-of-a-kind experiences fuses the work of composer Anna Whitaker and visual artist Riley Towers to create an unforgettable night of dance and genre-bending art.

Around the river, Hamilton’s The Pink Flamingo Spiegeland will be rolling out another weekend of glitz, glamour and grandeur. Experience the pavilion’s awe-inspiring antics with an evening romp at one of three shows. For a trip to the mayhem of the Moulin Rouge, try La Teaze – the Pink Flamingo’s burlesque experience full of seductive spectacles and extravagant escapades. Ripped promises testosterone-tinged theatre with a steamy male revue show and the Vegas-style comedy Suave will wow you with aerial artistry and captivating cirque acts.

Exhibitions
For another weekend, the blockbuster exhibition Fairy Tales continues to transform the galleries of QAGOMA into an enchanting wonderland of artwork, artefacts and costumes. Dedicated to the magic of fairy-tales, this fantastical exhibition deals with the complex cultural undercurrent of these timeless stories and lets you explore a wide range of perspectives on the fairy-tales that defined your childhood. Over the weekend, Australian Cinémathèque is continuing its movie marathon of fairy-tale-themed films – spanning new contexts and different eras. This weekend, you can catch the Japanese folk-flick Dreams (1990) as well as the cinema-classic The Wizard of Oz (1939) screening for free.

In the same precinct, new exhibition North by North-West has just opened at the Queensland Art Gallery building. This latest collection showcases both new and established pieces from the Gallery’s vast Indigenous Australian art collection, with a focus on the top half of the country. Traverse from the Tiwi in the north to the Pitjantjatjara people of the south and discover the regional styles of each Country including artistic tradition and songline, motifs and ancestral stories.

Museum of Brisbane boasts a bouquet of artworks that honour the tradition of floral still-life with its current exhibition Rearranged: Art of the Flower. This curated collection blooms with colour, with artworks across various mediums offering traditional and new takes on the timeless muse of the flower.  Open all weekend and conveniently located in the city, take a frolic through the flower-themed artworks of Rearranged.

Hot new hobbies
If you’re your new year energy is dwindling – recharge with a new workshop or class this weekend. Studio Maverik is hosting a summer-inspired Still Life Drawing Session this Sunday afternoon in collaboration with viral glasswork artist Lawn Bowls. Draw from technicolour scenes that celebrate the bright imagery, colour and pattern of summer and the unique look of Lawn Bowls’ creations. This two-hour class is BYO, so you can bring your favourite tipple and turn your typical Sunday session into a creative challenge.

The recently relocated premium gym precinct Function Well is inviting you and your furry friend to its rooftop gym this Saturday for a Puppy Pilates session. This mat class is open to all and integrates your pup into the workout as well. Once you’re finished your workout atop the magnificent Breakfast Creek precinct, enjoy a complimentary Puppycino and coffee from MICA.

Food and drink
This month marks International Margarita Day – with bars the world over celebrating this sensational salt-rimmed and sweetly sour cult cocktail. You’ll find various venues across Brisbane shaking it up in honour of the marvellous marg. Altos Tequila is shouting 20,000 margaritas at its favourite bars across the country – so find your local outpost and let this famed tequila distillery cover your next round.

At Southbank, the taqueria Mucho Mexicano has joined forces with the French liqueur Cointreau to add a touch of orange bitters to your margs. For $7.50, you can sip on the reimagined flavours of Mucho Mexican’s mini margaritas menu. Small in stature but huge in flavour, these mini margs come in Classic, Passionfruit and Coconut and will be available all weekend long.

Brisbane’s food scene has a hot new couple (literally). If you’re looking to spice things up, Italian-eatery Ramona Trattoria has coupled up with hot sauce slinger Bippi this Valentine’s to create a steamy limited-edition menu – Red Hot Week of Amore. Ramona will be bringing the heat with mouth-watering dishes like Amatriciana Pomodoro and a spicy salami Diavola. This hot new culinary couple will be sizzling until Monday February 19.

For an afternoon steeped in sophistication, enjoy The Lab’s ever-elegant high tea experience in the ambient surrounds of the Treasury Hotel. Feast on an indulgent menu of sweet and savoury delights hand-picked by executive chef Steven Jones and sip bottomless tea from one of Paris’ oldest tea blenders. Get those pinkies up and celebrate (or just spoil yourself) with an afternoon tea this weekend.

Markets
Start your weekend with a stroll through the stalls at Brisbane’s best markets. Take in the sunlight and shop the best of local produce whilst you refuel with a street food feast. Hit up: Riverside Markets, Kelvin Grove Village Market, Jan Powers Farmers Markets, Carseldine Markets, Nundah Farmers Markets and the Redcliffe Markets. If you prefer to press snooze, experience all this market goodness at Eat Street Northshore – open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
