When in the presence of Desire Marea, you’re sure to feel a noticeable change in atmosphere as his experimental and avant-garde nature of being fills the room. One half of South-African duo FAKA, Desire Marea’s essence lies in his abilities to break through glass ceilings, test limits, change perceptions and toe the societal line. On Thursday June 15, Brisbane Powerhouse will play host to the artist’s demanding presence at Desire Marea – On The Romance of Being. This latest sound-making conquest tackles themes from emotionally unavailable lovers to personal breakthrough. The crux of this album sees a contrast from its predecessor Desire, as it transitions from Desire’s liturgical sound and alternative RnB to On The Romance of Being’s moody and saturnine feel. Those who listen closely will note the album’s documentation of the raw human experience from desire and passion to love and loss, as a noticeable shift takes place from carnal impulse to a spiritual awakening. This theme is not an out of place one for Desire Marea, in fact, it is a befitting route following the artist’s recent spiritual milestone of becoming a Nguni spiritual healer, also known as a sangoma. Desire’s desire to take on this traditional practice lies in a deep-rooted feeling of purpose – to serve his earthly and ancestral communities.

The making of this album saw him record live with an ensemble of 13 musicians, with many songs perfected on the first take.
