The exhibition is multi-sensory and totally immersive, using the projection of 3,000 images to render Van Gogh’s masterworks, set to a classical score, and using fragrance which is piped in to transform the space around each visitor.

Van Gogh Alive was created by Melbourne’s Grande Experiences and has toured across the world in 150 cities to over 18 million visitors and will arrive at Brisbane’s Northshore this Spring.

Including works such as Starry Night, Sunflowers, Van Gogh’s Bedroom, and Café Terrace at Night, the exhibition takes visitors through Van Gogh’s most influential and prolific locales:  the Netherlands, Paris, Arles, Saint Remy, and Auvers-sur-Oise.

Van Gogh was both a prolific artist and famously unsuccessful, having sold only one painting of 2,000 works of art during his life.

Revered for their use of warm, vibrant colours, Van Gogh’s artworks vastly diverged from his lived experience as his struggle with depression saw his untimely death aged 37.

Posthumously received as a misunderstood genius, Van Gogh’s paintings are now some of most expensive ever sold.

Andrew Kay, promoter for Van Gogh Alive, said they have specifically designed the Grand Pavilion to house the exhibit which uses 40 high-definition projectors with cinema-quality surround sound to display the masterworks of the revered artist.

“The Grand Pavilion is not only home to the Sensory 4TM Gallery which houses Van Gogh Alive, but it features four additional immersive spaces including Van Gogh’s bedroom, Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, the amazing Infinity Sunflower Room, where you can stand in a never ending field of sunflowers.

“The spectacular Starry Night Room allows visitors to walk on air through Van Gogh’s famous painting Starry Night. Trust us, Brisbane hasn’t seen anything like it.

“This is undoubtedly the world’s most popular multi-sensory and mind-blowing art experience, and we are thrilled that Brisbane will be the second leg of its two-year multi-city tour.”

Bruce Peterson, Van Gogh Alive’s owner and creator, said they wanted to redefine the way people experience works of art, rejecting the idea of tiptoeing around galleries, viewing works of art from afar in silence.

“Van Gogh Alive is an exceptionally innovative multi-sensory experience that took 18 months and countless iterations over the past decade to create. It was the very first of its kind in the world.

“It has brought tremendous pleasure to audiences old and young, experienced and inexperienced in art and culture.”
